Rakshabandhan

Rakshabandhan

India is a country of dynamic culture, We celebrate around 37 festivals each year and it has its own meaning. Raksha Bandhan is one of the popular festivals of Hindus but it is also followed by Non Hindus for its beautiful meaning and gesture! The exact meaning of “Raksha Bandhan” in Sanskrit is "the bond of protection, obligation, or care”. Raksha Bandhan has many stories and history, the famous one is from our Mahabarat.

In Mahabaratha on the auspicious occasion of “Maharasanti” Lord Krishna cut his finger and was bleeding, Seeing this Draupadi quickly cut off a part of the loose end of her sari and tied it on his finger. In return, Krishna promised to protect her. Krishna’s help to Draupadi was immortalised in mythology, her sari keeps getting extended, which is how he answers her call for help. We can also find Raksha Bandhan in History, Raksha Bandan amulet was sent by Roxana, King Alexander’s wife to Porus the king of Pauravas and she asked him not to hurt her husband, Porus did not attack Alexander and lost the battle. Such dutiful is the Raksha Bandan festival.

Thanks to women empowerment, things have changed now. A woman is more than enough to protect herself. So the festival was also modified. We tie Rakhi to our sisters, mothers and sister in laws. We see little boys tying rakhi on little girl’s hands, a welcoming change. Little girls are getting physically stronger , we are talking to our kids about gender equality and bringing them up with a non judgemental mind. Let us continue to protect each other from the social evil of our society.

BabyOrgno wishes all the brothers and sisters , Happy Raksha Bandan !
