What is BugsAway Mosquito Repellent Spray?

BugsAway is a 100% natural, DEET-free mosquito repellent spray for kids from 6 months. It is made with five natural oils citronella, lemongrass, palmarosa, camphor and eucalyptus and works as a baby mosquito repellent on exposed skin, on clothing, and around the room for wider cover.

Is it really DEET-free, and what else is left out?

Yes. BugsAway is free from DEET, permethrin, picaridin, allethrin and kerosene the five chemicals most commonly found in conventional repellents. It is also preservative-free and contains no artificial colour, added fragrance, mineral oil or parabens.

Where exactly should I spray it?

On exposed skin shoulders, arms, legs and back keeping away from the face and eyes. It can also go on clothing, blankets and the stroller. For extra cover, mist behind curtains, under furniture and into the corners of the room.

How does a natural repellent actually work?

Mosquitoes locate people by scent rather than sight. Citronella, lemongrass and palmarosa produce a strong surface scent that interferes with that, so the mosquito does not land in the first place. Unlike DEET, nothing needs to be absorbed into the skin for it to work.

Is it safe for a 6-month-old, and can I use a mosquito repellent on a baby under 6 months?

BugsAway is formulated for children from 6 months and is paediatrician and dermatologically tested. Avoid the face and eyes, and do a patch test on the inner forearm before first full use.

For babies under 6 months, we do not recommend applying any repellent to the skin. Paediatric guidance is generally to use physical barriers instead a mosquito net over the cot, long sleeves, and screens on windows. Speak to your paediatrician before using any mosquito repellent for babies under 6 months.

How is this better than a coil or a vaporiser?

A coil works by filling the room with smoke, and a vaporiser releases allethrin over several hours neither is something most parents want running in a child's bedroom all night. BugsAway gives you room cover without anything burning or heating.

Can I use it as a mosquito repellent spray for clothes?

Yes. Spraying clothes, blankets and the stroller is one of the three ways to use it, and it is the route we recommend for younger children and for overnight cover. Mosquitoes locate people by scent, so a repellent on fabric works the same way it does on skin.
